BUCKINGHAM VILLAGE: About Us

ABOUT BUCKINGHAM VILLAGE...

Due to its proximity to Washington, DC—a city whose real estate prices soared in the early 2000s—Arlington County has experienced rapid gentrification over the past few decades, pushing out many long-term tenants and altering its economic and cultural demographics. Buckingham Village was re-developed to preserve affordable housing for its community members.

Built between 1937 and 1950, Buckingham Village was one of the first two-story garden apartment-style buildings in the country. The complex housed the workers who flocked to Washington, DC for Federal jobs in the post-Depression era. Over the years, the demographics of the inhabitants of Buckingham Village changed multiple times. Most recently, the complex consists of largely of working Latino families.

Arlington County acquired the land for $34.5 million in March 2009 to preserve it as affordable housing. Construction lasted from 2011-2015. The resident association BU-GATA was a pivotal partner and organizer at every stage of the redevelopment planning and building. Founded in 1992, BU-GATA is a consistently strong and trusted advocate for the Buckingham community.
